Introduction

This program is designed to give you, the softball coach, some idea about the responsibility that has been given you. That responsibility entails more than just knowing the nuts and bolts of softball. It includes knowing how to deal with parents, how to care for injuries, understanding risk management, your legal duties as a coach, how to organize a practice, and much more. You will receive a ACE Coaching Certification Manual. Carefully read your manual before each season begins. Take it out on the field with you. Think of this manual as a tool. Just as a  batting tee used to help improve hitting, this manual is a tool for you to use to improve your skills as a coach.

The manual is a practical guide to coaching. We know you do not have four assistant coaches, professional facilities, a huge budget, great equipment, and terrific players. Therefore, we attempt to address your situation in a realistic manner taking into account things like:

* This is probably your first coaching experience.
* You probably became qualified to coach not because you said "yes," but because you did not say "No."
* You might not know what kind of equipment you need, much less what condition it is in.
* Your own kids are more than you can handle, and now you are responsible for the entire team.
* What your team does during games does not look close to any softball games you have ever seen.
* You considered yourself a patient person until you held your first softball practice.

If any of these statements echo how you feel about coaching youth softball, then you are in luck

The Impact of Coaches

I have come to a frightening conclusion.

I am the decisive element on the field.
It is my personal approach that creates the climate.
it is my daily mood that makes the weather.
As a coach, I posses tremendous power to make an athletics life miserable or joyous.
I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration.
In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated and an athlete humanized or de-humanized.

The ACE (Achieve, Certify, Educate) Coaching Certification Program, developed and designed to provide softball coaches of all levels - from beginning coaches to experienced veterans - an opportunity to certify as a coach with a national softball organization.

Please feel free to contact the Michigan Amateur Softball Association if you are interested in hosting or attending one of these ASA Coaching Certification Clinics.
