PICK-UP PLAYER RULES


ASA CODE
Article 201        MEMBERSHIP.        Upon proper application and qualification, membership in ASA ( MASA ) shall be available to local associations, individuals, teams and organizations on a voluntary basis and who agree to be governed by the Code, rules and regulations of ASA ( MASA ).


 MASA BYLAWS
Article 15.01     APPLICABILITY.    The Michigan Amateur Softball Association ( MASA ), as a member of the Amateur Softball Association ( ASA ), adheres and abides by all rules and regulations of the ASA unless specifically covered in the official publications of the Michigan Amateur Softball Association.


ASA CODE
Article 503        PICK-UP PLAYERS.
In adult divisions of play, a pick-up player may be substituted for after participation. Managers should review and apply all regulations as they apply to the ASA Code, Article 503, Pick-Up Players.


PICK-UP PLAYER FORM
Pick-up players must sign an official pick-up player form which also must be signed by the team's manager, the local association commissioner ( District Commissioner when applicable ) and the player's parent or guardian ( Junior Olympics ) and attached to the team's official roster before the team participates in the tournament.
DEADLINE.    The Official Pick-Up Player form must be properly executed, brought to the tournament site and approved prior to the team participating in it’s first game. 
Under no circumstances is a player allowed to be picked up from a team that has been drawn into the tournament and later eliminated from that same tournament.


POINTS OF EMPHASIS
a) Pick-up players must be from the team's own local association.
b) A player may only play on one team per level of play. Levels of play are district, regional, state, and national.
c) If a player is on more than one roster in a division of play, that player is classified at the highest classification.
EXCEPTION:
All men's and women's fast pitch divisions and Junior Olympic Gold Girls 18-Under Fast Pitch. Pickup players may come from teams within the region that are no longer eligible for championship play. Pick-ups will not be allowed after the National Championship Finals for the National Championship Series.

Pick-up players must have played for an ASA registered team during the current season and must have played in the division of play for which they are being picked up.
EXCEPTIONS:

 

 

a )

If a team has qualified for, but cannot go to the ASA/USA Softball Junior Olympic Girls Fast Pitch Northeast, Southern, Southwestern, Midwest or Western National Tournament, the players are eligible to be picked up by teams who have qualified for one of the aforementioned tournaments or for a National Championship Final.

 

 

b )

If a team that has qualified for ASA / USA Softball Junior Olympic Girls Fast Pitch Northeast, Southern, Southwestern, Midwest or Western National Tournament declares its intent to go to the tournament director within 24 hours of the conclusion of the qualifying event, the players are not eligible to be picked up.

 

 

 

 

DIVISION AND CLASSIFICATION.  Pick-up players must be from the team's same division of play and the same or lower classification.


EXCEPTIONS:


MASA Men’s Masters Division I I
.   Pick-Up Players will be allowed from the Men’s Slow Pitch Division as long as it does not change the team’s classification.

A player who has competed in Junior Olympic or Men's 23-Under championship play is eligible to participate in adult championship play during the same season as a pick-up player. Players ( adult and Junior Olympic ) whose teams have qualified to compete in the highest level tournaments in a classification shall not be eligible pick-up players.

QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT PLAY.     No players may be picked up for qualifying tournament play.


SUBSTITUTING PICK-UP PLAYERS.   In adult divisions of play, a pick-up player may be substituted for after participation.

In Junior Olympic Divisions of Play, a pick-up player may NOT be substituted for after participation.

JUNIOR OLYMPIC GOLD, CLASS A and Class B.  
Players who compete on adult teams, as pick-up players are only eligible to be pick up for Major or Class A teams.

ONE ADDITIONAL TEAM.     A player may play with only one team other than his own team within a division of play in a season.

WHEN.     The use of pick-up players may be utilized at any level of championship play prior to the national championship as follows:

The general MASA interpretation as to where pick-up players may come from is that you may pick up players from the area you are advancing from, as follows: 

 

MASA DISTRICT PLAY

Pick-up player must come from teams that are registered within their respective district, from teams who are no longer eligible to participate in championship play and after the District Tournament deadline.

 

MASA REGIONAL PLAY ( FP )

Pick-up player must come from teams that are registered within their respective region from teams who are no longer eligible to participate in championship play and after the Regional Tournament deadline.

 

GREAT LAKES REGIONAL ( FP )
and NATIONAL TOURNAMENTS

Pick-up player must come from teams that
are registered within their respective state
associations, from teams who are no longer eligible to participate in championship play and after the Tournament deadline.


EXCEPTION:

Men's and Women's Major Fast Pitch and Men's and Women's Class A Fast Pitch adult teams may pick up players from their respective regions ( Great Lakes Region ).
