Local, State & National Training Clinics

A Note from Bryan Smith, State UIC

Hello USA Softball of Michigan Umpires,

Welcome to all umpires whether you are thinking of being an umpire or are a veteran umpire, we are glad and appreciate that you are part of our program.  Our program is rich in history and known across of the country of having quality umpires.

For the new umpires, you are taking the first steps into a career that has great opportunities and many chances for advancement.  For the veteran umpire, you are taking the steps to keep growing and learning by checking this Web site and information on upcoming clinics.

In 2018, the USA Softball of Michigan program had 68 umpires assigned to national and international tournaments.  Our umpires traveled to Indiana, Florida, Texas, Missouri, and places in between this past season. We were very proud to have five umpires represent our program at the international level in 2018.  We will have many more opportunities for our umpires to participate at the national and international level in 2019 as we are hosting two national tournaments in Rockford.

This year we will be hosting a national school in Holland in April.  We are very excited for this opportunity for our umpires to learn and gain knowledge from our national staff.  One of the requirements to be eligible to participate in a national tournament is to attend a USA Softball of Michigan State Clinic, USA Softball of Metro Detroit School, or a USA Softball National School.  For more information, check out the USA Softball of Michigan Web site.  In addition to the national school, we will have two USA Softball of Michigan state clinics; one in Eaton Rapids in February, and another in Flint in March.  The information for the school and clinics can be found farther down on this page. For the state clinics, we will have breakout classroom sessions, gym sessions, and a session for our newer umpires.  Check back to this Web site as the clinic dates get closer for the actual class sessions.  There is no charge to attend state clinics, there may be a small fee for a served lunch.  Bring a friend and join us for the day.

As a reminder, every umpire MUST register individually through  If you have been registered since 2015 you have been issued a username, password, and a permanent member ID.  Do NOT create a new profile if you don’t remember your information. If you have any questions, please contact Jerry Hanson at (989) 835-5821 or

As an umpire you are the ambassadors of the USA Softball of Michigan program.  We appreciate what you do for us and bring to our program every day.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your district or state umpire staff members.

Have a great season, and I look forward to seeing you at one of our USA Softball of Michigan state clinics.
